Absolute Artists – Marilo Cunningham

Brush strokes that conjure serene realities: this is how I would describe Marilo Cunninghams work.

Marilo recently exhibited her work at our Absolute Artists Gallery ‘Grand Opening’ and received much praise from the local art community. Indeed, her seaside landscapes conjured the energy of the West Coast in a most tangible fashion!

Her latest creation entitled ‘Spirit of Dance’ illustrates her impressive ability to capture motion and a wonderful depth of human emotion.

I was completely blown away when I saw this latest painting, because I had only seen her still-life and landscape style paintings – both of which are superb. It was a impressive to see how well she expressed the essence of her subject.

It was no surprise to me when I heard that this wonderful painting had ‘found a home’ only two days after its creation.

We were intrigued to find out more about Marilo’s approach to art, so we asked her a few questions:

Absolute Artists: What is your philosophy on painting?
Marilo: I have always had love of art. I do however believe that you should never try and please someone else with what you create. It must come from within, you must be inspired to try something new or moved to challenge yourself to do something different. I think the best work I have done was not even planned. Follow your heart and be brave!

Absolute Artists: What is your preferred medium?
Marilo: Well, my favorite medium is definitely oils. I have done a bit of work with acrylic in the past and also experimented with ink. The only medium I don’t really enjoying using are water colours – but who knows maybe in the future I will try my hand at it again.

Absolute Artists: What inspires you?
Marilo: It is not just what but ‘who’ – my family, starting with my dad (an artist himself) with his philosophy and appreciation of love and life; my mom with her unconditional love and support; my beautiful two little girls, my husband from which I draw inspiration and guidance. I am also blessed with 3 sisters (and brothers-in-law) and a brother (and his lovely girlfriend) J
I also find inspiration in Nature and in some of my other passions, hence the Spirit of Dance Painting.

Absolute Artists: Will you be doing more ballet themed paintings?
Marilo: Definitely! It’s another of my passions and it was a nice challenge.
